Corn Gluten Meal, Last Minute Trimming and More

Usually we only apply corn gluten meal in the spring and fall and that is all that is required for broadleaf weed control.  Remember that you must be sure to get the right kind—it will be Natures Guide Brand and only say Corn Gluten Meal---it will be powdered----if it says "fine grind" or "spreadable" or "granular"—it will not work well because it cannot be bonded with the soil by a light watering.

This year it would be a good idea to do a July application because of the erosion caused by the hard frequent rains—If your soil washed away so did the corn gluten meal. You will still need to apply it again in late October or November for control of broadleaf weeds next spring.

Be sure to keep your vines from covering over other plants, shrubs and trees. If they cover the canopy of other landscape material it can damage or even kill that other plant. The only thing to do when you realize that your vines are taking over other plants is pull them off the plant and really cut them back. It won’t hurt them.

Get your last minute trimming of spring bloomers done before the end of July or you will hurt your spring bloom. Continue to deadhead roses and perennials

If you are growing fruit and vegetables, keep the ripe ones picked to keep production up. Don’t let veggies like squash, cucumbers and okra get too big—they get woody and if left on will stop the plants from producing new veggies. Keep your ripe tomatoes and figs picked for the same reason.
